 Labradorite

Labradorite is the name for a sodium-rich variety of plagioclase feldspar found in igneous or metamorphic rocks.  When light hits labradorite from a particular direction, it can display striking rainbow-colored eflections.  Labradorite has been described as looking like gasoline lying on water or the delicate wings of a tropical butterfly.  It is in the same family as moonstone.  The high quality type of   labradorite mined in Finland is call spectrolite, which has a dark or black base and a wide spectrum of colors.Labradorite officially was discovered on St. Paul Island in Labrador, Canada, in 1770. Labradorite is said to detoxify the body and slow the aging process.  It also is believed to heal mental confusion and indecision.

Lampwork Glass

Lampwork Glass has become very popular in beaded jewelry designs.  It comes in a variety of beautiful colors and designs.  Lampworkers use a torch to melt the tips of colorful glass rods.  As it melts, they wind the fluid glass around a mandrel, a narrow stainless steel rod.  Later, when the bead is removed, the space  occupied by the mandrel becomes a hole in the center of the bead which is used to string it into jewelry designs. The beads are cooled in a kiln, where temperatures can be closely regulated.  The beadmaker anneals the  bead as soon as it comes out of the flame.  That means the bead is left to soak up heat in the kiln so that all glass within it is the same temperature.  The      soaking temperature is high enough for glass to flow on some    molecular level, but not so high that the bead ends up in a puddle on the kiln floor.  After annealing, the artist begins to reduce the heat in the kiln, taking several hours to bring the beads to room temperature.  The slow reduction in temperature  produces glass beads with fewer stress points.

Lapis Lazuli
This gemstone is a deep blue with shining inclusions that twinkle like stars.  This gemstone is composed of grains of several blue minerals, including lazurite and sodalite.   Lapis lazuli was created millions of years ago in the course of a metamorphosis, turning chalk into marble stone.  The rich blue color is due to the sulful inherent in the structure of lazurite.  Until 1958, lapis lazuli was an official birthstone of December.  Water can dissolve its protective coating, so clean it with a soft, dry cloth.
Today, people around the world consider lapis lazuli be a stone of truth and friendship.  It is reputed to bring about harmony in relationships and to cleanse the mental body while releasing old karmic patterns.

Lapis lazuli is found in Afghanistan, Egypt, Canada and Chile.

Malachite

This gemstone is a basic copper carbonate, vividly banded with two or more tones of green.  Its name is probably derived from the Greek word for soft, malakos, for its low hardness.  The beautiful green color comes from the copper contained in the stone.  Malachite is a chemical twin of   azurite, and can form from azurite as it oxidizes.  For this reason, the two are commonly found together, sometimes going seamlessly from one to the other.  Malachite is said to aid in the regeneration of body cells and lend extra energy.  It is believed that gazing at malachite or holding it relaxes the nervous system and calms stormy   emotions.  Malachite is said to bring harmony into one’s life and gives knowledge and patience.  Malachite calms cramps, lowers blood pressure, treats asthma, arthritis, epilepsy, swollen joints, travel sickness, tumors, the optic nerve, pancreas and spleen.

Malachite is found in Zaire, Chile, Zimbabwe, Australia, Arizona, USA, France and England

Mother of Pearl

Mother of Pearl
Mother of pearl is the iridescent coating on the inside of mollusk shells.  It is so named because when a irritant gets inside a shell, the shell  protects itself by coating the irritant with the same material (nacre) of it lining that creates pearls (therefore, this substance is the creator, or mother, of pearls).  Nacre is composed of alternate layers of the aragonite form of calcium carbonate and conchiolin.  Some mother of pearl on the market has been bleached to achieve a brighter white.  In caring for your mother of pearl jewelry, be particularly aware that alcohol will eat right through the nacre, causing  irreparable damage to the color and luster.  Hair spray can contain alcohol so take your mother of pearl jewelry off before using hair spray.
Mother of pearl has been thought to treat heart palpitations, dizziness and high blood pressure.  Mother of pearl symbolizes faith, charity and innocence.

The chief sources of this gemstone are the pearl oyster, found in warm and tropical seas chiefly in Asia; and the freshwater pearl mussel, which lieves in many rivers of the United States and Europe; and the abalone of California, Japan and other pacific regions.
