Gold filled beads, clasps, and chains are made by using heat and pressure to apply a layer of karat gold to a base metal such as brass or nickel. The surface layer of karat gold is usually 10 kt, 12 kt, or 14 kt. The minumim layer of karat gold must equal 1/20 of the total weight of the item.
Gold filled is 50 to 100,00 times thicker than gold plating.
The process for creating gold filled beads was developed by the industry to help reduce cost for jewelry without sacrificing their beauty, durability and long term wear.
